“Where is God’s dwelling place?”
The rabbi from Kotsk once surprised a group of learned visitors with this question.
“How can you ask such a thing?” they laughed.
“The whole world is full of His glory.”
The rabbi smiled.
“God dwells,” he said, “wherever a person allows Him to dwell.”
The visitors grew solemn.
“You are too serious,” the rabbi spread his hands. “An intelligent face is not always a sign of intelligence. Many foolish things are done with exactly such expressions.”
Then he added:
“Smile, gentlemen, smile.”
“...And there should be more along the way,” remarked a man who looked very important.
“Indeed,” the rabbi nodded. “And children should learn to laugh naturally from an early age. A cheerful expression slowly shapes the inner world and teaches friendliness, kindness, and warmth toward others.”
