The Dragon of Luck

The Chinese have a remarkable gift for turning everyday objects into symbols of meaning and luck.

Even a single pearl is seen as a sign of love, wisdom, and prosperity.

One day, my Chinese friend Nancy surprised me. We often shopped for pearls together, yet I rarely saw her wear them.

“The important thing,” she smiled, “is simply to have pearls. They bring loyalty in love, help with wise decisions, and attract abundance.”

There is an ancient Chinese legend about a poor boy who found a magical pearl. At first, it filled his family’s nearly empty rice jar. Later, it brought prosperity to their home. When jealous thieves tried to steal the treasure, the boy swallowed the pearl to protect it. A burning fire grew inside him, and an unbearable thirst followed. He drank streams, then rivers, and finally transformed into a dragon.

Since then, the dragon boy is said to bring rain during droughts, helping people harvest their crops. In this way, the dragon became a symbol of strength, protection, and prosperity, while the pearl came to represent wisdom and good fortune.

In Chinese tradition, pearls are connected to the moon, water, and feminine energy. They carry a gentle strength, beauty, and harmony.

✧ The Pearl of Fortune Ritual ✧

Take a pearl — real or symbolic. If you do not have one, a small white stone will do.

Hold it in your hands and say:

“I welcome wisdom, abundance, and joyful opportunities into my life. May luck come easily, and may my heart remain kind.”

Place the pearl in your jewellery box, wallet, or wherever you keep important things. From time to time, hold it again and remember: even a tiny pearl can awaken a great dragon of fortune.
